EXPANDABLE HOUSES

Future houses are no longer constructed and located statically. It will be expandable, modular and relocatable.

These are only CGI concepts but implementable. They facilitate easy of transportability and expandability as well as cost reduction; cheaper to build , cheaper to buy.  They are also durable, less repair, last longer , less maintenance cost , less damaging to the environment (cut less trees) . They can be designed to withstand natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons , etc.

Don't you wish all houses and possessions  can be packed in a capsule just like in Dragonball ?

A GLASS SPHERE THAT COLLECTS SUNLIGHT

A design by a German Architect André Broessel of Rawlemon. The spherical  shape diffracts  the sunlight (or even moonlight) onto a small ray collecting area where the solar cells are. The steel robotic structure tracks the sunlight . The design claims having a collection efficiency of 35 % better than the conventional dual-axis photovoltaic designs.

I remember doing a course in photovoltaic system design  during my grad school years. Besides problem collecting sunlight , the other problem is the photovoltaic cells efficiency(cell conversion efficiency  , still low in my opinion) . Photovoltaic system does not have a wild adoption because of the cost (and break-even time) and cell efficiency; and of course , oil companies do not have the incentive to push for such technology.

Solar cell efficiency is affected by :

Reflectance efficiency
Charge Carrier Separation  efficiency
Thermodynamic efficiency
Conduction  efficiency

I still remember all these terms : Maxiumu Power Point; Fill Factor and Quantum Efficiency , etc....

Maybe one day, the whole scenario becomes that in Gundam OO, then again, human will fight for sunlight instead of oil!

Instead of the sky, the other place we can look for energy is the ground - Geothermal energy; unfortunately, it is still in a low percentage in electricity generation. This technology is mostly employed in areas where tectonic plate boundaries are.

CLOAKING

Just mess around with the focal points of the lens to give you the illusion of cloaking .

Please note that this design is being filed for patent.

Make your own cloaking device:

  1. Purchase 2 sets of 2 lenses with different focal lengths f1 and f2 (4 lenses total, 2 with f1 focal length, and 2 with f2 focal length)
  2. Separate the first 2 lenses by the sum of their focal lengths (So f1 lens is the first lens, f2 is the 2nd lens, and they are separated by t1= f1+ f2).
  3. Do the same in Step 2 for the other two lenses.
  4. Separate the two sets by t2=2 f2 (f1+ f2) / (f1 f2) apart, so that the two f2 lenses are t2 apart.

PEPPER 心を持ったロボット!

A robot developed by Softbank incorporation with Alderbaran Robotics and Foxconn. Pepper?? I guess its shape looks like a pepper shaker?? Its specialty is to mimick human behaviour and interpret/analyse the emotional state of the human to which it is speaking. It has a 10" big screen to better express itself visually.

It has various sensors (3D and sensory) , cameras , microphones, accelerometers like other robots but its strength is in emotion analysis , not much in human-like articulations (it walks on wheels and uses 20 motors for movements) . It uses Wi-Fi  to connect to the Cocoro SB  (in Japanese kokoro means heart 心, not the one that pumps blood) which is a cloud-based system to aid its emotion analysis and decision-making.

Pepper can learn from past interactions and store its accessments to an online database which will analyze the data and assist Pepper in future social situations.

I guess it can't follow you to the stairs......

Available in 2015.

SDK (Software Development Kit) will be available and presented in September, 2014.

Just give me Kikaida!

Levitation of objects using 3D Acoustic Standing Wave

The result is not surprising but fun to watch. The energy is only enough to lift small light objects but perhaps this can be used in transportation some day; but as people are getting fatter and fatter, I would be surprised that this technology could  levitate anyone more than 1 nanometer even under NO gravity condition!

JACK ANDRAKA : A 15 YEAR OLD INVENTED A SIMPLE AND MUCH CHEAPER WAY TO DETECT CANCER.

START

Jack Andraka is a 15 year old school boy from  Crownville , Maryland. He has invented a simple test to detect pancreatic cancer. The test is  proven to be 28 times faster (168 times faster than the standard test according to Jack in the video), also 28 times less expensive than the current available testing methodologies. Pancreatic cancer is often easier to detect at late stage of the cancer and so higher death rate. His invention can detect pancreatic cancer at an early stage and is patent-pending. His invention is also applicable to other types of cancer such as ovarian and lung cancer ,  and can provide early detection of diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis, and contaminants such as E. Coli and salmonella. Jack's uncle actually died of pancreatic cancer and this is how he got interested in the detection of this disease.

Without knowing too much of the Biology behind it , this is my understanding of his test:

When someone
such as Steve Jobs has pancreatic cancer , his blood and urine contain a biomarker called Mesothelin. His test involves coating single-walled nanotubes on paper with mesothelin-specific antibodies. Under normal circumstances, the nanotubes are closed together and conduct electricity (electric current flows)  but when mesothelin is present in the blood or urine, the mesothelin-specific antibodies on the nanotubes will bind to the mesothelin in the blood and will expand, this will spread the nanotubes apart. Spreading the nanotubes apart will reduce the conductivity and therefore reducing the electric current. The higher the concentration of mesothelin in the blood (i.e. patient has pancreatic cancer) , further apart are the nanotubes , lesser the electric current. This is how pancreatic cancer can be detected even at an early stage.

Jack contacted 197 scientists and was rejected by all of them , telling him his test would not work, until he met Dr. Anirban Maitra , a professor in pathology and oncology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr Maitra gave him lab space and mentored Jack to develop his test. Jack is the recipient of Gordon E. Moore Award with the grand prize of 75,000 US at the 2012 Intel Science Fair.

This nanotubes-on-paper sensor costs only 3 cents. Cheap, effective and efficient.

Jack at Intel Science Fair 2012.

I wonder why all those 197 scientists telling Jack that his test would not work!? Probably because Jack's invention will destroy their business and therefore taking away their incomes. Capitalism is all about greed (of money invented by human!).

This planet needs more useful people such as Jack and instead of people like Donald Trump  , bankers , lawyers and other useless people just taking up oxygen!

BLADELESS FAN BY DYSON

This is a fan without rotating blades. How can this be possible?? It basically relies on the principle of air moving from high pressure to low pressure region. The trick is to create this low pressure region that sucks in air from high pressure region. Rotating blades push air in chunks as the blades rotate and chop the air; and you can feel these chunks of air pounding on you (actually they are not chunks but a swirl-like air flow). This fan does not have any rotating blades and therefore does not chop air, it provides a smooth flow of air. The other advantages of this design are the ease of cleaning (you still have to clean where the air is sucked in by the impeller at the bottom of the fan) and safety. It has been out for a while and rather expensive (between 300 US and 400 US depending on the models).

Although most people would rather buy a conventional fan than paying several hundred dollars for a fan, but this represents using different , better ideas to solve a problem - creativity.

Sir James Dyson , an industrial designer, explains how this fan works in this video:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/6314107/Dyson-bladeless-fan-how-it-works.html

I totally agree with what Sir James Dyson says in the following:

Dyson says UK must ditch banks to back science

The newly appointed Tory technology star attacked the banks for creating "illusory wealth" and said that the challenge now is to see if "Britain [can] make money from money – or money from making things".

Sir James, at the Conservative Party conference, said scientists needed better financial support, such as further tax incentives, but insisted "cultural changes" were crucial.

Sir James told the party conference that the development of new technologies had been "neglected" and that a "change of policy and of attitude" was needed.

Arguing that the number of patent applications was indicative of the health of business, Sir James said Japan has 19 times more patent applications than Britain, America 13 times more and South Korea seven times more.

He said: "Britain has 58,000 engineering vacancies but produces just 20,000 engineering graduates every year. What do we do? We close down engineering faculties - over 40 in the past decade."

We need to reawaken our innate creativity
and competitive spirit. If we nurture the next generation of scientists and
engineers then Britain can become Europe's hi-tech capital."

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>My thoughts>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Many including Hong Kong people are paying too much emphasis on finance (stock, investment) , real estate, etc instead of what really matters - science, engineering and technology. Hong Kong does not invest in techno-creativity nor does the government create any incentives in doing so. She has become a technological blackhole. Even the Chinese government understands that in order to transform China into a truly great country, they have to invest in technology. Currently, China has the fastest commercial trains on this planet - Maglev trains. If Hong Kong developments remain in the same direction and Hong Kong people still carry the same old mentality, she will become irrelevant to China. When one outlives his/her usefulness, (s)he will be discarded.

iPAD vs DEATHPAD

一套抄美洲 iMAC 廣告和死亡筆記自作 video, 好好笑.

iPHONE 4

At the Worldwide developers conference in San Francisco, Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple, announced the iPHONE 4.

iPHONE 4 has two versions: 16 GB memory (199US) and 32 GB memory version (299 US). It is 9.3 mm thick and is
thinner than the iPHONE 3GS. It comes with a head phone jack and primary and secondary microphone jacks. Speaker and the APPLE proprietary 30-pin connector are at the bottom. Volume  adjusts are on the sides. Both black and white cases are available.

iPHONE 4 has a steel alloy rim (the alloy is 5 times stronger than regular steel) around the phone body. It acts as part of the antenna system. The integrated antenna also holds the front and back glass panels ( same type of glass used in helicopters and high speed trains, chemically treated to be 30 times stronger than plastic and is scratch-resistant ). Protection cases called Bumper are available in black, white, green, blue and pink. The phone itself weighs 4.8 ounces.

iPHONE 4 uses the A4 SOC (System-on-chip) processor which is the same chip for iPAD. Apple has renamed the iPHONE OS to iOS4.

Apple names the displayt "retina display"
because the resolution (326 pixels per inch,  PPI) of the display  is higher than what the human eye can perceive.  The "retina" display is 3.5 inch diagonally with 960 x  640 resolution.  The brightness has contrast ratio of 800 to 1. The display and back panel are coated with fingerprint-resistant "oleophobic" coating.

The rear camera has 5 mega pixels which is capable of recording HD 720p,  30fps (frames per second) video. LED flash is constantly on for better video recording. There is also a front camera for video calls (Facetime). Standard protocols such as H264 and SIP (Session initiation protocol) are used for this application. Facetime only works with iPHONE to iPHONE calling. The front and rear cameras can be switched, so that you can display the image of rear or front camera on the display. Video and still images can be tap-focused
(on display). The display supports the display of multiple languages simultaneously.

Video specs are:

Supported Formats:
h.264 , upto 720p, 30 frames per second.

mp3 VBR (variable bit rate).
Audible Enhanced Audio , formats 2,3 and 4).
Apple lossless.
AIFF and WAV.

Maximum volume is user-programmable.

iPHONE 4 also has a 3-axis gyroscope which detects the phone's orientation together with an accelerometer  for 6-axis motion sensing. These are useful for games. Other sensors include ambient light sensing and proximity sensing.

Video of Steve Jobs explaining the gyroscope feature, click here.

iPHONE 4 has Wi-Fi 802 11n , Blue-tooth 2.1 (with EDR - enhanced data rate which uses GFSK and phase shift keying) , GPS , a digital compass.

Cellular specs are:

UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850MHz, 900MHz, 1.9 GHz and 2.1 GHz)
gsm.edge (850MHz, 900MHz, 1.8GHz and 1.9 GHz)

APPLE iPAD

APPLE 's newest gadget , the iPAD  (I don't like the name, iTABLET would be better), will be out in April 2010 in North America. The price is lower than expectation but still expensive in my opinion like any other APPLE products. Price starts at 499US and will vary depending on the amount of flash drive storage (16 , 32 and 64 GB) and connectivity. All models come with Wi-Fi (802.11n) connectivity. It costs 599 US for the 32 GB model and 699 US for the 64 GB model. If you want 3G wireless (maximum speed upto 7.2Mbps) , it costs 130 US more. The 3G service is provided by AT&T (North America). There are two non-contract plans: 15 US for 250 MB of data monthly plan or 30 US unlimited data monthly plan.

The brain of the iPAD is the A4 SOC processor running at 1GHz.

The device is 0.5 inch thick with a 9.7 inch (diagonal)  LED back-lit screen with a 178 viewing angle. It weighs about 1.5 lb and with the Lithium Polymer battery technology, its power lasts for about 10 hours. With the multi-touch technology, you can do flicking through photos, zooming , etc.

Besides the on-screen keyboard, there will be an external keyboard dock which also holds the iPAD vertically.

iPAD is slightly curved on the back so that it can be picked up easily when it is placed on a flat surface.

Wireless peripherals (like wireless keyboard or headphone ) can be connected to the iPAD via Bluetooth 2.1.

The 30 pin connector is used for charging the iPAD as well as connecting an external keyboard dock, camera.

Next to the 30-pin connector, there is the built-in speaker.

Other connectors are for the microphone and 3.5mm head phone jack

Video:
VGA: 1024 x 768 (dock connector to VGA adaptor)
Apple component A/V" 576p and 480p

SUPER EARTH GJ 1214b

What is 'Super Earth"?? It is a newly discovered planet similar to Earth but much bigger. It is located in another solar system but being too close to its Sun, the surface temperature (estimated at 188 C degree though some microbes on Earth can survive at 140 C degree) is too hot to sustain life. Its radius is 2.7 times larger than Earth's and is 42 light years away our Solar system. It is 6.5 times more massive but 3/4 of it is made up of liquid water. It has no continents. Its atmosphere is filled with hydrogen and helium. Its core is made of iron and nickel. The dense atmospheric pressure allows the water to remain liquid at such high temperature. It is also estimated that a significant amount of its atmosphere has been lost due to hydrodynamic escape.  It takes only 38 hours for this planet to orbit its sun.

This planet was discovered by MEarth Project using 8 amateur-size telescopes. The mass estimation of the planet was done using radial velocity data from a larger telescope.

The discovery of this planet was published in December 17 2009 issue of Nature by David Charbonneau and his colleagues of Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

This is an artist impression of the planet , not an actual photo.
