According to Sanrio (USA), there will be a movie based on Hello Kitty. Sanrio Japan (owner of the franchise) will be funding the movie with budget between $162 and $242 millions (USD). No words on whether this will be a live-action or animated film yet.
Other Sanrio-owned franchises My Melody and Little Twin Stars are also considered for movies. Both of them are 40 years old this year.
Hello Kitty is a multi-billion (5-7 Billions USD) franchise .
As a guy, I am not ashamed to acknowledge that I like all of the above mentioned characters : )
