After 22 years on the Tonight Show, it finally comes the time for the
departure of my most favourite comedian. He might not
be too well-known outside North America, but Jay Leno (the last name is
mispronouced by most North Americans) has been on my late night TV
screen for more years than I can remember. The Tonight Show with Jay Leno is still the
most watched in North America today, so Jay departs while he is still at his peak. Anyone who
has been watching him knows his non-biased comedy; doesn't matter you
are from the left , right or middle ; religious or athiests , whatever race or background, if it can
make people laugh, Jay will use the material in his dialogue. I can't remember how many
times I laugh so hard my stomach hurts and my eyes filled with tears of
laughter. I often record his show and watch it in the morning before
going to work; his comedy got me ready for the day.
Jay's last monologue on the Tonight Show.Due to possible heavy traffic, it might take time for the video to appear, or you can click this link to view:

I like the first joke , his last shot at NBC and the O.J. joke.
Last show with Billy Crystal (Jay's first guest on the Tonight Show and now his last).

A funny sketch from other celebrities to Jay. The first celebrity is Steve Carell who is Michael Scott in the TV series The Office (ended in 2013) , the character also left the job at the end of the series.

Jay
probaby is the nicest person in the entertainment business and is a private guy. I really don't know much about his personal life. I only found out his father's passing in the first year he took over the Tonight Show and his mother's and brother's passings in subsequent years in his emotional goodbye tonight. As he said, since his
family were gone years ago, the audience is his family. Jay is married
to Mavis (Nicholson, a few years older than Leno) since 1980 with no
children. From all others' descriptions of Jay, he is just a nice guy,
often helping others (regular people and other celebrities) including those
who would eventually replace him on the Tonight Show. Jay donates a lot to many charities. It was reported that Jay does not spend his earned money from the Tonight Show but from his Stand-Up comedy career.
Many have
criticised Jay for not leaving the Tonight Show when he was to be
replaced (2010) by Conan O'Brien whom Jay had also helped in Conan's
earlier time. I don't think there is anything wrong for Jay returning to
the Tonight Show. It was the idiotic NBC executives who created the
situation, not Jay. Now Jay is again being replaced by another late
night host , Jimmy Fallon (whom Jay also helped) because according to
NBC executives , Jay is too expensive to keep and too old to attract young audience; maybe those non-prolific
executives can take a pay-cut to keep NBC running and the young audience can learn to use their brains to appreciate comedy rather than watching someone jumping around.Personally, I find
neither Conan nor Jimmy funny , I am not really into physical comedy (maybe Jimmy is not completely physical but still he is not funny), I
prefer Jay's comedy that requires thinking and knowledge, I just like Jay's presentations of his jokes. I have also
watched other late night shows occasionally, none of them is even closed to what Jay can deliever. I
like one of his jokes on his last Tonight Show : All these years he has
been on the Tonight Show, O.J. (Simpson) still hasn't found the
murderer, that cracks me up.
Jay has been very gracious , supporting Jimmy Fallon all the way even though Jay is replaced by him.
Photo from the last (tonight 6 th Feb, 2014) show with Jay's first guest 22 years ago and his last guest 22 years later: Billy Crystal.
Jay
and his famous daily-worn blue jeans and shirt. He probably has the most-boring closet but I like Jay's simplicity and casual style.
Many
years ago, I taped Johnny Carson's (the previous Tonight Show's host
before Jay) last show. I can't believe I did the same for Jay's last
show. I hope he will back on TV someday (I doubt very much he could lie
down and does nothing; he can't even stand a few hours on the beach; I
guess now he has more time to work on his extremely large car/bike
collections) . Jay loves to work and is probably the hardest working
person in the entertainment business (well, besides Samuel L. Jackson who is in most movies from Star Wars to Snakes on a plane).
He will continue to be on the stage to do what he loves best - stand-up
comedy. He has been loyal to his fans and to the company that kicked him
out - NBC. He could goto other TV networks but I doubt that he would. As he
said in his final show: NBC has been his family all these years and he
knows no one in other netoworks, that's why he stayed with NBC.
I
feel sad for him watching his teary goodbye on his last show. At 63, he
is not that old. He is still energetic and delivers his comedy superbly. Thank
you for making me laugh all these years and truly from the bottom of my
heart, you shall be missed.
