The co-founder of APPLE Steve Paul Jobs has passed away on 5th October, 2011 after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer (Pancreas is located below the stomach and produces hormones such as insulin, glucose and somatostatin as well as digestive enzymes). Steve Jobs co-founded APPLE with Steve Wozniak when he was 27 years old. In the 1970s, he, Steven Wosniak and others had developed, designed and marketed the very first commercially successful Personal Computer Apple I (sold at 666.66US), and Apple II. Incidentally , he sold his Volkswagen to start his company located at Silicon Valley in 1976. He was the first one who saw the potential of the Xerox Parc's mouse-driven Graphical Interface that led to the creation of the Macintosh computers , as well as Bill Gates 's Windows platform. After a power struggle with Apple's board of Directors in 1985 and was ousted by his hand-picked successor John Scully. He left Apple and founded NeXT which specialized in developing platforms (computers and software) for higher education and business. In 1986, he bought the computer graphics division of Lucas Film and formed Pixar Animation Studios which produces many well-known animation movies you might have seen. Pixar was later purchased by Walt Disney but Steven Jobs remained the individual with the largest share at Disney.

In 1996 , NeXT was bought by Apple and Steve Jobs returned to the company he co-founded.
When he returned to Apple, he brought the dying company to the status of being one of the best , innovative companies in the world. During his tenure as the CEO of APPLE, APPLE shares rose from $10 US to $400 US per share. He streamlined APPLE and focused his company on the consumer and education markets rather than the professional markets since these markets are dominated by Microsoft and IBM.

Steve Jobs was famous for his product presentations which were highly anticipated and praised. He remained to be the cultural icon for technology. He was the driving force behind the infamous Macintosh (1984) ; iPOD (2001) ; iBOOK (2002) ; iPHONE (2007, market share is 28% in 2011) ; iPAD (2010) , etc. Besides hardware, in 2003, he introduced a new way to sell music , the iTUNES (all songs are sold at 0.99 cents US and 9.99 US per album). He was an advocate for devices that are both functional and aesthetically-pleasing. He was also famous for his micro-management style. He liked details.

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know,” Mr. Jobs said in a letter to Apple's board of directors. “Unfortunately, that day has come.”
Steve Jobs
From APPLE web site:
I personally think Steve Jobs was a brilliant marketer, promoter and visionary. (I leave most of the technological credits to the engineers behind the design of the iPOD, iPHONE, iPAD, etc). He made technology hip again. Indeed , he was hip in his own way, he stood out from the crowd by not conforming to the traditions , by thinking differently, be the innovator , not a follower. He didn't believe in being trapped in dogmas. He inspired and invigorated people.
"I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work.
Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.
The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.
For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely."
Bill Gates
Bill Gates also tweeted:
"Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to Steve Jobs’ family & friends. The world rarely sees someone who made such a profound impact.”
Despite the fact that Microsoft and Apple are competitors, Bill Gates was an early advocate of the Macintosh and he also recognised the importance of GUI (Graphical User Interface).
