MASTER Q CREATOR DIES AT 93

The comic artist behind famous Chinese comic Lao Fu Zi or Old Master Q Alfonso Wong has passed away at the age of 93.

According to the Old Master Q Comics Facebook page, Wong - originally named Wong Kar Hei - died in the United States of organ failure at 5.57am on Sunday.
Wong was born in Tianjin, China, in 1925.

He moved to Hong Kong in 1956 and studied Western art at Beijing Catholic University.
Wong's drawings were featured in Bibles at a French Catholic missionary in Hong Kong, and he was also responsible for the art editing in the church's magazine "Lok Fung Pao (Le Feng Bao)".

Wong created Old Master Q under the pen name of Wang Ze to create a comic depiction of daily life.

In an interview published on Old Master Q's official website, Wong said the comic is about "everyday matters" and about "seeing the everyday world with humour".

"I also wanted to create something funny, so people could take a break and find humor in their daily activities," said Wong in the interview about the series which is led by  Old Master Q, an elderly, lanky man with small reading glasses, dressed in traditional Chinese attire.

The Old Master Q comics first appeared in the 1960s and has since been made into several Cantonese and Mandarin cartoon animations, and the Old Master Q comics are still in circulation today but are created by graphic artist Ronny Cuxun.

Wong not only enjoyed drawing, he also loved pottery and fishing.

In his younger days, he played hockey, did gymnastics, judo, boxing, ballet and diving.
He also enjoyed painting, hunting and riding motorcycles.

The Old Master Q Comics Facebook page quoted Wong as saying: "My life is like a comic strip, I will make Old Master Q captivate my audience as much as I can."

You don't need to know Chinese to read the comic (drawing is self-explanatory) , here is the web site for the comic archives.
