Another Golden Girl is gone - Rue McClanahan

The Golden Girls is one of my favourite sitcoms. Rue's death is a total surprise to me even though I know she had not  been well. She had  been suffering from breast cancer and had heart by-pass surgery.

Rue played the vibrant, men-loving Blanche Devereaux  in the Golden Girls. This character has nothing but her beauty and men , and of course cheese-cake.

Rue spoke of the characters in the Golden Girls. She joked about she was nothing like Blanche she played........She is NOT from Georgia like Blanche.....but still men-crazy????? Haha

An interview from October, 2009

The Golden Girls: Left of photo: Estelle Getty ( the always mean, sarcastic but loving-at-heart Sophia Petrillo) ; front: Beatrice Arthur (the intelligent, take-no-non-sense but can't-find-a-man Dorothy Petrillo Zbornak); right: Betty White (the ever naive , caring but competitive Rose Nylund) and top center: Rue McClanahan (the lustful, men-loving , full of libido but self-centered  Blanche Devereaux).

The Golden girls is a runaway hit in the 80's. I personally find the characters vibrant and they have lived fully with their lives, despite their ages. The show was well casted (with many famous guest stars) and written. You would see a perfect woman when you take the good characteristics out of each golden girls.

Rue McClanahan did many works including many Broadway shows, Jimmy Shine (1968), The Women (2001). Her TV career spanned from the 1950s to 2009; from Maude (another hit show 1972-1978, starring Beatrice Arthur , another golden girl who passed away last year),  the Love Boat, Newhart , the Golden Girls , Empty Nest, Murphy Brown (1997), Law and Order (2009); she even did voice for TV animations such as Spider-Man (1995) and King of the Hill (2007). She was seen attending a show at Broadway supporting her friends in April, 2010.

Since 2008, my most beloved Golden Girl , Estelle Getty (Sophia) died, every year after has one girl passed away: 2009 (Bea Arthur) and today,  3rd June, 2010 , Rue has left us. I hope the pattern does not continue......

Rue was born Eddi-Rue McClanahan in Healton , Oklahoma (that explains her southern accent) and graduated in German and theatre arts with honours from the University of Tulsa. She married 6 times (she must love men as much as the character Blanche she played in the Golden Girls). In 2007, she published a book called My first five husbands and the ones who got away.

Betty is now the only surviving Golden Girl. She is still very active ( and funny) on TV and commercials. I wish she would stay with us for a long time.

Rue, farewell.........
